A modern brewery without green energy is like a pub without beer. For this reason, recent years have seen us invest heavily in the installation of solar panels. In 2021, we took the first step by installing some 1,055 solar panels. Now, ten years on from the start of works on our Bierkasteel in Izegem, our brewery now runs 30% off green energy.

Let’s jump back in time to 2021, when we installed 1,055 solar panels. Together, these account for some 5,000 m² of roof surface area, offering a total annual output of 350 MWh. While that is a good start, this will not be enough to satisfy our long-term green energy requirements. The solution? Installing additional solar panels. Thankfully, we found the required additional space on the roofs of our storage sheds. Thus, towards the end of September 2023, following preparatory works on the roofs, we began installing 3,474 solar panels. Together, these account for 9,392 m² of roof surface area, creating an annual output of 1,800 MWh.

Solar panels

By investing in solar panels, our brewery now runs 30% off of green energy. In summary:

  • Total number of solar panels: 4,529
  • Used roof surface area: 14,392 m²
  • Yearly power output: 2,150 MWh
  • Annual CO2 savings: 1,072 tonnes
